Active recovery’s an important part of physical growth (in sport, e.g. running) but it’s also important for recovery from some mental stress.
Active recovery is differentiated from rest by engagement. Yoga vs TV the day after a run.
Active recovery is different for different people.
Active recovery stretches the same muscle as that which was stressed by a previous exercise. You don’t lift weights as active recovery from a run.
Active recovery can be built into some work. Walking is a mental recovery for me if I’m writing or doing other creative work. Craig Mod’s work naturally blends walking with his creative output. Other work can do the same.

Active recovery is typically a physical concept, but it has a mental analogue.
- The body’s fundamental needs — diet, sleep, and exercise — also have mental analogues.
- There’s a set of inputs that constituted out context does (and more generally the diet of ideas were exposed to)
- There’s a requirement for rest and reflection to process those inputs
- There’s a process of active engagement with those ideas and the synthesis of our own perspectives on them — as well as the synthesis of new ideas — that mirrors the exercise of the body.
- These three map to the notions of input, process, and output both mentally and physically.
- Active recovery fits poorly into the rest category. It’s not exactly processing or the lack of diet or exercise — active recovery can be composed of any of these types of activity.
